Final Music Video

Final Ancillaries

Magazine Advert:

Above is my final edition of my magazine advert. Overall I'm pretty impressed with my work ethic towards this piece of work as I put a lot of work into the design of it. From my first draft of this I have made several improvements, one of which is that I made the silhouette figure much more crispier and sharper as I thought it didn't look as distinctive as I wanted it to. Also I decided  to instead of simply just writing 'NME' and 'GQ' for example I decided to include the actual logo of that magazine as I thought this would look more professional. Moving from that I also decided to include social networking logo's to reach out to fans and my target audience as then it's a way that the fans can feel like there closer and interacting with the band which I why I chose to involve the website address also.

Digipak:

Above is my final edit of my digipak which I have completed towards my a2 media coursework. After looking through my first edit of my digipak I felt as if my skills wasn't shown throughout and I felt like it could easily be improved especially over the fact that it was rushed and I didn't put as much effort into it as I could have.
Moving from my first draft one of the main changes I made was that I actually took new pictures as before I used print screens from my music video so automatically I thought this could improve my final edition of my digipak. Also I decided to completely change the panel which involved Polaroid images as I thought it definitely looked rushed and very pixelated so I decided to change this idea. Also I decided that my front cover looked far too plain as there was only writing on it so I decided to move my silhouettes onto it which instantly made it look more appealing. I also completely altered the CD panel as I came to the conclusion the idea of an alarm clock didn't look professional so I decided to keep it simple and alter it to make it bolder. The other two panels which makes up my digipak simply just includes images which I took of the band but I tried to represent these images is an artistic way instead of just imported an image onto it.

Magazine Advert ~ First Draft

Draft of Magazine Advert:

Above is my first draft of my magazine advert which is to promote Arctic Monkey's new album 'AM'. During the process of producing my magazine advert not to many problems occurred as I thoroughly designed my ad making sure I had planned what exactly I wanted to involve on it which also helped when I got round to taking pictures toward my digipak and advert. From completing my digipak to this I was sure I wanted to keep the theme of involving the silhouette of Sheffield city as the background because I thought it looked professional and worked really well.
For this ad I wanted to make sure I involved a lot of the main conventions of successful magazine advert to therefore make my own a great success. One convention I used was a review. The quote I used was from the CLASH magazine which basically sums up Arctic Monkeys new album. This is one great way of getting new people listening to artist’s music as they could see the positive review and therefore later download there album. Also I included ratings from well-known magazines and newspapers so that it was evidently rated a great album.
With the text format I kept it as the same font as my digipak keeping the theme and helping them link together as they both are for the same product. One change I made from my original plan was I decided not to blend an image of the three lads together for the main image in the ad but instead chose to use the silhouette image which I previously used in the digipak.
I am in fact pleased with my first draft of my magazine advert because I included everything I planned to and in fact I think it's quite remember able as it's quite a unique design in my opinion.

Digipak ~ First Draft

Creating:

In my process of creating my first draft of my digipak I first of all decided to create my background which is in fact a landscape silhouette of Sheffield. I decided to do this as it helps represent where the band ‘Arctic Monkey’s’ is originally from. My initial idea was to keep it simple and keep the outline which I created over the software ‘Photoshop’ in black and white but after playing around on Photoshop and experimenting with colours I decided I wanted the background colour to be within the blue/purple colour region.

On the left hand side is a few examples of my experiments with colours. I thought this would be a good thing to do because as it's the background is quite important as it's the base of the whole of the digipak and because I want a theme linked between the whole on the new released album I thought this could be an ideal theme which I could have between my digipak and magazine advert to help represent to the audience that there both advertising the same product within the same band.

After I had finally made my mind up on the colours and aspects of the actual background of my digipak I then went onto finalise my chosen font which I wanted the artists name to be printed in. I wanted the text to give off a raw impression as the Arctic Monkeys are quite grunge and hipster within the music industry but also i wanted the text to give of an effect that it was rushed and the band doesn't really care all they care about is the music. Some of my ideas are below:

After doing my research within text I finally decided on my chosen font which is named 'permanent marker'. I think that this font works really well as it simply looks as if one of the band members have just quickly wrote it which could in fact give off another personal aspect to there audiences because it doesn't look as formal and structured.

I also went on to decide which font I wanted to be on the alarm clock. I decided to make sure i wanted an alarm clock font so that it would look more professional so I then went onto 'font squirrel', which is a website for fonts.

First Draft of Digipak:

Below is my first draft of my digipak which I have created towards my A2 Media coursework. I decided to use my background landscape of Sheffield throughout the whole of the project because I thought it would look better by having a theme throughout it.

With my front cover I wanted to keep it quite simple because by researching album covers especially Indie Rock bands they don't put too much on the front cover. I also thought that the font which I chose works really well because it does make it look as if someone had wrote it so it doesn't look so structured. I think that the track list section of the digipak is my favorite because I think that the colours go great together. For this section I first of all had to take a picture of a vinyl then free transform it on Photoshop and position it in the correct place. I then upload the track listings and altered the colour of the text. I decided to put the record labels name on the back of the digipak above the barcode because it could be seen as a selling point to customers because people may not know who The Arctic Monkeys are but they may know that Domino Records only sign top class acts. I decided to use polaroid images as templates for one of the inside panels because i thought it would be a good way to help portray old and present images of the band over the years. I also thought that by having polaroid images it could help show that they have been together a long time and they have great chemistry together. During the editing stages of this section i tried to make the images look old and discoloured because they was meant to be Polaroid images. During the editing stage of the CD section i came to the conclusion of not importing an image of an alarm clock but instead draw it over Photoshop with the pen tool. I thought this would look better because I would suit the rock genre by giving off an effect of rebellion. I also decided to include the bands autographs on this section because from research I have noticed bands tend to do this because this is another great selling point of the album. Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to finish my digipak in time for the first draft deadline so I never had chance to finish the second panel which i had planned to include images of the bands silhouette walking along the street.

Improvements ~ First Edit

  • One improvements is to make sure next time we film Paper Shop Dave is that we film more aspects of the band singing because looking back on our draft we actually haven’t captured many close ups of the lead singer which I think we need to do to get the highest grade possible.
  • Another improvement we have identified is that we need to make the shots within the shed brighter as we think it simply looks too dull.
  • Also looking back on our music video we have noticed that we have included numerous of zooming in and out shots which we didn’t intend to do because we definitely don’t want to include any of these movements as we find that it loses focus.
  • We have also decided that we need to involve some sort of ambient sound at the beginning of the sequence as we think this will work and blend into the music much better especially because we think it will match the location accordingly to make the opening more efficient.

Editing ~ First Edit

Unfortunately I and Jordan didn’t have the time we had planned to fulfil all the wishes we wanted to within the editing process as we hadn’t managed our time very efficiently. First of all when we came onto our editing process it was the day after we filmed our first location with the band, we straight away uploaded all the footage onto the computer and got rid of the videos which was not needed and began to rename the shots we decided to use as we found that this would help later on within the editing software as we knew what video was of what. After uploading the videos onto the editing software we firstly decided that we would start to put together the opening which is where Jordan is in the car and when he gradually walks to the shed. We spent a lot of our time doing this but thankfully we thought it paid off as we are very pleased with the outcome. As a group we decided to do an introduction like we have because we find it helps to create an atmosphere that it is simply a band practice which involves a group of close friends.

The instrumental of the song first comes in as Jordan opens the shed door as we found helped to build and create positive feeling and tension. At this point we had recently gone away and filmed our second narrative at our second location which involved Jess acting as Arabella. We then realised how close our deadline was and how much we had to edit in the short time we had which caused us both to get a little worried. From that we began to rush the editing process and not spend as much care with the little details which we had planned as we decided as a group we simply wanted to meet the deadline and we could re film what we needed after the deadline as we realised we have half term coming up. As shown above we did meet the deadline for our first draft which brought our spirit up as we felt more confident that had identified what we wanted to change and improve.

Within our editing process we involve a lot of dynamic effects one of which is fading, we found this works really well within our video because we was very careful whilst editing our shots together and we have realised that it helps to prove our music with a smooth and relaxed feel to it instead of straight cutting every single shot. Although we found that the introduction looks much more professional that we have straight cut every shot because it looks more fast paced and gives of the feeling that the actor is wanting to get to somewhere important quickly.

Filming ~ First Edit

As our chosen location was a shed within one of the band members garden we didn’t have too much trouble having to book anything out to rent although because the shed wasn’t sound proof we had to be careful of how much sound we was making and had to make sure we didn’t film late at night as we found that may be disrespectful so we resulted in filming our first lot of filming of Paper Shop Dave during the day. Thankfully the weather for this day of shooting was nice and bright which was one of the obstacles we were worried about that we may have had to overcome.
One of the couple of troubles we came across was that whilst filming we realised that we hadn’t deleted previous footage off the memory card so we had to take a break and sit down and delete footage which was not needed which resulted in our time scale being altered. Another problem we had was that we struggled to find good angles straight away in the shed as it isn’t an open space so we struggled to be able to fit the whole of the band members within the shot. Finally another minor problem we had to overcome was the battery went whilst we was filming so we had to delay the shooting for a short while to charge the battery which was also very time consuming so we decided to make sure that we had two ready charged battery’s for next time we filmed. For our first location we finally completed the filming up to the standard we wanted and were happy with so we then went onto edit the beginning of the music video.

As well as the shed we planned to have another location which was Attenborough Nature Reserve where we planned to film the second part of our music video which was with Jess playing ‘Arabella’ within our music video. The weather for this day wasn’t ideal as it was freezing cold which therefore created an attitude which wasn’t positive as we felt like we wanted to simply get it over with at the beginning. Fortunately after I and Jordan got into it we felt more comfortable within our roles of directors and producers. We also found the positives within the weather as we did want Jess to dress as she was in winter so it helped emphasise this reason. Because this location was outside we didn’t plan to use any other lighting sources which I thought was a good idea because it wasn’t needed. Whilst filming Jess we told her to simply act herself because we didn’t want her to look structured which is why our filming of Jess is simply short shots of herself sitting on benches, walking along a bridge and standing around. Within our planning we decided to involve a close up of Arabella texting someone followed by a smile which would give off the affect that someone within the band had texted her because we thought we could then film the band at this same location. Unfortunately our time management wasn’t good enough for us to pursue this so we decided that for our first draft we wouldn’t involve this part as we hadn’t had chance to film the part of Paper Shop Dave performing at Attenborough Nature Reserve. Within our filming we thought we had used a numerous of shots to outline our skills including of an establishing shot, Close ups, Pans, Tracking, Extreme Close ups and the list continues so overall we was quite happy with our first draft because we had already pointed out ourselves what we wanted to change and what we needed to re film to enable for us to gain a good level without our feedback from our teachers and peers.
